The State of Victoria has signed a $2 billion contract with the Evolution Rail consortium for 65 High Capacity Metro Trains.

The new fleet will be used on the Cranbourne Pakenham line before becoming the dedicated fleet between Pakenham and Sunbury through the new Metro Tunnel.

All of the trains will be built in the state. As well as creating opportunities for apprentices, the project is working in partnership with Toyota, Chisholm Institute and Swinburne University to retrain technicians from the automotive sector.

The Evolution Rail consortium is made up of Downer Rail, China’s CRRC and Plenary Group.

The first train set will be delivered by November 2018 and will enter service the following year. All of the trains will be in passenger service by 2026.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said: “We’re investing in new trains built in Victoria, for Victoria – putting local jobs and local train users first.”

“Together with the removal of every level crossing between Dandenong and the city, these new trains will reduce crowding and make the daily commute more comfortable for thousands of passengers.”
