Siemens is to supply six hybrid battery-powered versions of its S70 light rail vehicles for Charlotte’s Gold Line extension.
Charlotte City Council announced on November 28 that it had awarded the $40.4 million contract to Siemens, which has already built 42 standard S70 vehicles for the city’s Blue Line.
The new light rail vehicles will operate on the second phase of the CityLYNX Gold Line and will replace the replica vintage streetcars currently in service.
By using a hybrid solution, the new light rail vehicles will be able to operate on sections of the route without overhead catenary.
Work on the Gold Line extension is due to begin in January and is expected to open autumn 2020. It will extend the line by four kilometres to the east and west, adding 11 new stops.
