Construction of Tampere’s new tram network is on course to begin next year following a contract signing earlier this week between the city council and the alliance delivering the project.

Phase one of the project will extend south from Tampere’s city centre to the Hervanta suburb and the city’s hospital. It will involve the construction of 15 kilometres of tramway and a new depot in Hervanta.

Pöyry, YIT and VR Track plan to complete the first phase by 2021. Phase two of the network, which is scheduled to open in 2024, will extend the line north from the city centre to Lentävänniemi.

The cost of building the system has been revised up from €250 million to €283 million – not including the cost of the light rail vehicles, which are being supplied by Transtech Oy.

Mikko Inkala, president of Pöyry’s Infrastructure Design Unit, said: “The representatives of Tampere and the engineers and contractors of the light rail project have worked hard together for over a year to find the best solutions for the project.

“The implementation decision will realise this work for the benefit of Tampere, resulting in a smooth implementation of the project and a high quality light rail system.”
