Alstom has said a 20-train order for line 4 of the Paris Metro will secure jobs at its French manufacturing sites and throughout the wider supply chain.

The additional six-car trains, which have been ordered by STIF and RATP, are an option on a framework contract signed in March 2015.

The framework agreement inked last year, which is for up to 217 trains, is worth more than €2 billion.

The driverless MP14 units are one component of a larger project to automate line 4 – one of the busiest lines on the network.

Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud, Alstom France general director, said: “Alstom is delighted to receive an additional order for this material, which will mobilise the entire French railway industry.

“This metro contains numerous innovations, in particular related to reductions in energy consumption and total cost of ownership.”

Alstom says the MP14 trains will employ regenerative braking and will reduce energy consumption by 20 per cent.
