MTR has taken over the operation and maintenance of the Stockholm Pendeltåg commuter rail network.

MTR Pendeltågen AB, which officially took over on December 11, will sit alongside MTR’s two existing Swedish rail services: Stockholm Metro and the intercity MTR Express service between Stockholm and Gothenburg.

The 10-year concession includes the operation of trains, station management and rolling stock maintenance. The concession includes an optional four-year extension.

During the concession, MTR will help to commission the new City Line, which will free up capacity through the centre of Stockholm by creating a dedicated tunnel for commuter services.

Lincoln Leong, chief executive officer of MTR Corporation, said: “Our focus for the Pendeltåg network is to progressively deliver enhancements in the reliability and efficiency of the train service and to improve customer satisfaction.

“We will be adding 150 extra customer-facing staff to provide more assistance to our passengers. We will also be refurbishing the trains and the stations and installing better lighting systems to provide a more comfortable, welcoming and secure travelling environment.”
