Three companies – Balfour Beatty, Carillion and VolkerFitzpatrick – have been shortlisted to build London Overground’s 4.5 km Barking Riverside extension.

The extension of the Gospel Oak to Barking line, which is currently closed for electrification works, will serve the new Barking Riverside scheme – a major housing development which will create up to 10,800 new homes.

Transport for London (TfL) submitted a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) for the line in March and hopes to be in a position to start construction towards the end of 2017.

If all goes to plan, services could begin sometime in 2021.

Jonathan Fox, TfL’s director of London Rail, said: “The Barking Riverside extension is key to regenerating this part of east London, helping to support up to 10,800 new homes, along with new jobs and improved facilities for the local community.

“The London Overground network has helped regenerate other parts of London by providing a frequent, reliable and high standard rail services, and this rail extension will help Barking riverside to grow and develop.”

The developer, Barking Riverside Limited, is funding the full £263 million cost of the project. Without the extension, it would only be able to obtain planning permission for a fraction of the number of new homes.
