The Province of Utrecht has confirmed it will extend an existing agreement with CAF for new Urbos trams, ordering an additional 22 vehicles.

The Spanish manufacturer is now supplying Utrecht with 59 Urbos 100 trams – the first of which is expected to enter passenger service next summer.

CAF has said it will be possible for the new seven-car units to be coupled to the five-car vehicles ordered in 2015. The resulting 12-car units will be 75 metres long and, quite likely, the longest trams in the world.

CAF delivered the first new tram to Nieuwegein in December 2016, where it is now undergoing testing.

The first new Urbos 100 trams will enter service on the new Uithof Line. The first of the additional 22 units will operate from 2020 on the RegioTram Utrecht line between Utrecht, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein.
