Rolls-Royce subsidiary MTU is to supply the power packs for Northern’s new fleet of Class 195 DMUs.

The 6H 1800 R85L engines are designed to meet the strict EU Stage IIIB emissions directive and deliver 390 kW of power output.

Spanish manufacturer CAF is supplying 55 new two and three-car trains for Arriva Rail North, the current operators of the Northern franchise, for the future Northern Connect service. The order also includes 31 three-car and 12 four-car EMUs.

The first new train will go into service in December 2018.
