Hyundai Rotem is to supply 256 new metro cars for line 3 of the Cairo Metro in a deal worth 433 billion won.

Hyundai described the order as its largest from the African market. It follows an order in 2012 to build the trains for line 1.

Once complete, line 3 will run east-west across the city, connecting Cairo International Airport with El Bohy and Shehab to the west of the Nile.

Hyundai said it plans to use local suppliers and will supply all of the units by 2020. The first of the new trains will be delivered in 2018.

The contract was awarded by the National Authority for Tunnels – an agency of the Egyptian Ministry of Transportation.
