Greater Anglia is to build a new depot on the site of a former chemical works factory near Manningtree station to maintain its new fleet of Stadler trains.

The 22-acre depot, which includes 13 tracks, will initially be used to commission the new trains. Long term, the facility will be used for cleaning, stabling and light maintenance.

Taylor Woodrow has won the contract to design and build the depot. Facilities will include a wheel lathe, a train wash, remote monitoring systems and storage for spare parts.

Construction work is scheduled to start in the summer and the depot should be completed by the end of 2018.

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, said: “These are exciting plans which are integral to our commitment to improve and transform the railway in East Anglia.

“Providing a depot at Manningtree will enable us to bring in our ambitious new timetable with more frequent trains and reduced journey times. It also reduces the amount of time that trains are out of service for maintenance.”
