Milan Metro operator Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) has exercised an option for 15 more Leonardo trains from Hitachi.

The contract, which was signed on February 8, is the final call-off on a framework order for 60 trains placed in 2012 with Hitachi’s predecessor, AnsaldoBreda.

Of the new 15 units, nine will serve Line 1 and six will serve Line 2.

All of the original 30 trains ordered in 2012 are already in service and a further 15 ordered in 2016 are currently under construction at Hitachi’s sites in Pistoia and Naples.

The final Leonardo train set is expected to be delivered by April 2019.

Maurizio Manfellotto, chief executive of Hitachi Rail Italy, said: “We are delighted that once again ATM has shown their confidence in Hitachi by exercising their final option for these 15 trains.

“Our state-of-the-art trains have been providing the best service to the travelling public in Milan, and were delivered on time and budget to ATM.”
