Four years since starting work, the four tunnel boring machines excavating Copenhagen’s Cityringen railway have completed their journey.
Nora, Tria, Minerva and Eva have now finished the 15.5km twin-bore tunnels for the new line, keeping it on course to open in 2019.
Cityringen, which translated into English means City Circle, is a new orbital rail network which will serve the centre of Copenhagen. Seventeen new stations will be built along the route.
The link will provide extra capacity to Copenhagen’s metro network, which last year saw record passenger numbers.
At a ceremony to celebrate the milestone at the Copenhagen H station site, Denmark’s Prime Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said he had been following the line’s construction and spoke about how he often hears work underway while walking his dog around the Kongens Nytorv public square.
