Progress Rail says it has successfully completed the first emissions tests of its re-engineered EMD24B locomotive.
The ‘repower locomotive’ will now undergo 3,000 hours of in-service verification testing with Pacific Harbor Line to demonstrate that it meets the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emissions standards.
Although the EMD24B is powered by a new, less polluting, 2,000 horsepower Cat® 3512C HD engine and after-treatment system, the underframe and cab, which are from an EMD GP-40 locomotive, are more than 40 years old.
Progress Rail’s chief executive officer and Caterpillar senior vice president, Billy Ainsworth, said: “In 2010, PHL took part in one of our largest repower projects to date by modernising an existing locomotive fleet with cleaner burning engines.
“Today, we’re pleased to continue that legacy of collaborating for cleaner air, through our latest testing efforts for our Tier 4 ready switcher locomotive.”
