SBB has received its final ETR 610 Pendolino train from Alstom’s factory in Savigliano.
The delivery completes SBB’s fleet of 19 tilting trains. The final unit will now begin operating EuroCity services on the Gotthard and Simplon line.
In 2004, the now defunct operator Cisalpino – a joint venture between Trenitalia and SBB – ordered 14 ETR 610 units. These trains were shared out equally between Trenitalia and SBB when the Cisalpino name was abandoned.
In 2012 and 2014, SBB placed orders for a total of 12 additional units. These have replaced the previous generation of ETR 470 Pendolinos.
The seven-car trains have a commercial operating speed of 250 km/h. As well as using the tilting technology commonly associated with the Pendolino name, the ETR 610s have ‘flexible’ bogies designed to reduce wear to the track and wheels.
