The national rail operators of France and Switzerland, SNCF and SBB, have signed an agreement supporting the creation of the cross-border Léman Express network.

Services are due to begin in December 2019 on the new Cornavin-Eaux-Vives-Annemasse (CEVA) line. More than 40 stations in the Vaud and Geneva cantons in Switzerland and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France will make up the new 230km network.

The agreement, which was signed in Paris on March 4, sets out the terms of the service and paves the way for the creation of a new joint operating company, Lémanis.

SBB and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region have invested around €460 million in 40 new four-car, multi-system trains for the cross-border service. These include 23 Stadler FLIRT France and 17 Alstom Régiolis CEVA EMUs.
