ABB has been appointed by Bombardier to supply roof-mounted traction transformers for Austrian Federal Railways’ (ÖBB) fleet of new Talent 3 EMUs.

ABB will provide 42 transformers to be fitted to 21 trains. The order is part of a framework contract for up to 600 traction units to be supplied by 2024.

In December, Bombardier signed a €1.8 billion contract for up to 300 EMUs. The first 21 will be delivered in 2019 and will operate regional and cross-border services in Austria’s Vorarlberg region.

The Effilight transformers convert voltage from the overhead catenary to power the traction, signalling and sub-systems on board.

ABB says its solution is designed to reduce the amount of oil required within the transformer by up to 70 per cent, which in turn reduces the weight of the units by 20 per cent and, as a result, the energy consumed to drive the train.
