A new facility for pre-assembling overhead line equipment for electrification has opened in Crewe.

Developed by Unipart and VolkerRail, it is the third fabrication facility of its kind and will support Network Rail’s North West Electrification Programme – phase 3 (NWEP3) project.

The new facility has resulted in the hiring of five new fabricators and apprentices, and follows the opening of the first facility, for the Stafford Area Improvement Programme, and the second, for the Rail Electrification Alliance’s Power Supply Upgrade Project.

VolkerRail’s major projects director Stuart Birch said: “NWEP3 necessitated a step change in our approach to prefabrication and delivery methods for overhead line electrification.

“With the help of Unipart Rail, we have been able to create a co-located facility, which provides time, quality and cost benefits to our client and the industry.”
