The Powerlines Group has been awarded a contract to electrify the 120-year-old Kaiserstuhl line in Germany.

Contracted by state-owned operating company SWEG, Powerlines’ German and Austrian divisions will work together to deliver the project in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany.

Electrification of the 37.6km line is required to enable trains on the Kaiserstuhl line to link up with the Breisacher Bahn, which will also soon be electrified, and the electrified Höllentalbahn.

The scope of the contract includes the construction of 91 concrete foundations, the installation of 412 pile-driven large-diameter tube foundations and 305 drilled large-diameter tube foundations.

More than 800 masts and 99 static and movable tensioning systems are to be installed along the line.

The project is due to be completed by December 2018.

The Kaiserstuhl line runs between Riegel-Malterdingen, Gottenheim and Breisach. In addition to the electrification, much of the local rail network around Freiburg is currently being reconstructed and expanded.
