ABB has opened a traction transformer factory in Johannesburg which will manufacture parts for Transnet’s new electric locomotives.

Supporting South Africa’s growing railway network, the 2,450 square metre plant’s first order will be to supply traction units for 240 new Bombardier TRAXX locomotives.

Traction transformers convert voltage from overhead catenary to the required level to power the traction and sub-systems on board.

Sixty positions are expected to be created at the new ABB site by the end of 2017.

ABB chief executive Ulrich Spiesshofer said: “ABB is proud of this new traction transformer facility in South Africa, reiterating our philosophy of locating manufacturing units close to our customers.

“It reinforces our Next Level strategy focus on strengthening our presence in Africa and supports our ongoing commitment to sustainable mobility.”

Bombardier has also invested in South Africa’s domestic manufacturing industry, opening a production facility in Isando last year.
