Engineering firm Bechtel has been appointed as a delivery management partner for the Sydney Metro project.

As part of its work Bechtel will manage the delivery of 15.5km of twin-bore tunnelling, using five tunnel boring machines, and the excavation of six new metro stations for Stage 2 of the automated rapid transit project.

Australia’s largest public transport project, Sydney Metro will see the delivery of 31 metro stations, more than 65km of new metro rail and new twin rail tunnels under Sydney Harbour.

Transport for NSW project director Tim Parker said: “The Sydney Metro is crucial to the modernisation and transformation of the city’s public transport network and will help meet the challenges of a growing population.

“We believe that Bechtel is the right partner with the right leadership skills and programme management expertise to deliver a world-class metro system for Sydney.”

Stage 2, which is expected to be operational by 2024, will extend metro rail from Sydney’s north west region, beneath Sydney Harbour, through new underground central business district stations to Bankstown.
