Metro operator Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and consultancy firm Ayesa have been awarded a $6.8 million contract to supervise the extension of Lima metro’s line 1.

The consortium will oversee the project to double the capacity of the line in the Peruvian capital.

Awarded by Ositran, the three-year contract covers the auditing of a $410 million investment programme. This will include: the acquisition and testing of 20 five-car trains and 39 additional carriages, the adaptation of new entrances to the lines, the remodelling of five stations and the upgrading of the electrical system and railway line signage.

Line 1, which is 34.6 kilometres long, is the first line in operation of the six planned. Lines 2 and 3 are currently in their construction and design phases, respectively.

Line 1 was used by 320,000 in 2016 – a level of demand that was not expected until 2035 – and thanks to the extension project it will be able to transport 500,000 passengers a day with a train every three minutes instead of every six minutes.
