Spanish construction firm Comsa and Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler have been announced as the preferred suppliers to construct a new light rail network in Odense, Denmark.

With preparatory works already underway, this marks the next step in the delivery of the city’s new light rail line.

Comsa will build and commission the 14.5 km tram system, which will link the Tarup Centro and Hjallese districts of Denmark’s third largest city.

Stadler’s contract specifies 16 Variobahn light rail vehicles. These will be built in Germany, costing DKK 21 million (approximately €2.8 million) per unit.

The contract also includes the construction of a maintenance facility in the south of the city.

The city of Odense said it had decided to order two more vehicles than originally planned to allow it to run eight services an hour.
