SBB is to modernise its fleet of IC2000 intercity trains to extend their lifespan by 20 years.
The overhaul will cost CHF 300 million and, once complete, will ensure all 341 coaches meet new accessibility standards.
SBB uses the IC2000 push-pull trains for services on the Geneva-Bern-St Gallen and Romanshorn-Brig corridors.
The double-deck IC2000 trains were built between 1997 and 2004. New, modernised train sets with new interiors and exterior liveries will begin rolling out of SBB’s site in Olten from 2019. The project is due to be completed by 2024.
Other upgrades include LED lighting and at-seat power sockets. The dining cars will also be refreshed.
