Italian rail operator Trenitalia has issued a tender for 135 diesel-electric commuter trains.

The new trains will be divided into two types, 200 seaters and 300 seaters, with the first 30 new trains going to the regions of Sardinia, Sicily and Tuscany.

The contract also includes the train maintenance for 15 years, with an option for a further 10.

Trenitalia CEO Barbara Morgante said (translated from Italian): “We’re focusing heavily on regional transport, which remains one of the main objectives of the 2017/2026 business plan presented last September by the FS Group.

“In recent years we have greatly improved the punctuality and regularity  of the service and started a fleet modernization which involves a total investment of over EUR 5 billion.”

The deadline for submissions to Trenitalia – Italy’s main train operator -is July 7.
