A cross-border train service between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan has been launched.

The passenger service will travel from the Uzbek cities of Samarkand through Tashkent – its capital – and terminate in the Kazakh capital city of Astana.

Launched by national railway companies Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and Uzbekiston Temir Yollari, it is hoped the service will strengthen the two nation’s cooperation and boost tourism in the area – in particular in the run up to the international energy exposition Expo 2017, which is to be held across Kazakhstan.

The launch was marked by the arrival of the first passenger train at Nurly Jol station on June 3 with representatives from both rail companies in attendance.
