A partnership has been struck between the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CAHSRA) and the Los Angeles Metro Transportation Authority (Metro) to improve connectivity in Southern California.

CAHSRA will invest $115 million to help fund Metro’s Regional Connector Transit Project, an underground light rail system which will cost around $1.75 billion and better connect existing lines in Los Angeles.

Once it is complete, the 1.9 mile connector will link the Gold Line with the 7th Street/Metro Centre station in the Downtown area, improving local and regional travel in the process.

Metro said that the extension will offer an alternative transportation option to the congested roadways and also boasts significant environmental benefits, economic development and employment opportunities across Los Angeles County.

Three new stations will be built for the connector which is estimated to be opened in 2021.
