Designed by world-renowned architects Zaha Hadid, Napoli Afragola can legitimately claim to be a station of the future.

Italy’ Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni arrived on a Frecciarossa 1000 on June 6 to formally open the station, which is located to the north of the city’s international airport.

London-based architects Zaha Hadid began designing the station, which has been built by Astaldi, in 2003.

Napoli Afragola will welcome 36 high-speed trains a day – half of which will be operated by Trenitalia and half by open access operator NTV.

The station will provide a new connection in Napoli for Milan-Salerno, Rome-Reggio Calabria and Torino/Milan-Napoli Centrale services.

The first services will call at Napoli Afragola on June 11. Another major milestone will come in 2022 with the opening of a new high-speed link between Napoli and Bari.

Circumvesuviana trains, an important service for tourists linking Napoli and Sorrento with Pompeii, and regional trains serving Caserta, Benevento and Napoli’s northern districts will also eventually use the new interchange.

The station building itself is split over four floors and covers an area of more than 30,000 square metres. It features two solar roofs, which can generate 200 kW of renewable energy, and two rainwater harvesting tanks.
