Rolling stock company Alpha Trains has acquired six locomotives from Stadler to be used by Portuguese rail operator Medway.

The six-axle Euro4000 trains were built at Stadler’s plant in Albuixech, Valencia, and will operate in Portugal and Spain – marking Medway’s official entry into the latter market.

To operate in both countries, the assets – four of which have been acquired on lease – are equipped with the Spanish and Portuguese signalling system and radio.

It also marks the first time Medway has leased locomotives from Alpha Trains.

Medway president Carlos Vasconcelos said: “Expanding and updating our fleet with these four new interoperable locomotives represents a huge step towards our business goals: it will officially mean the entrance in the Spanish market, through a focus on innovation, sustainability and modernisation, which will surely be key for us on our way to turn Medway into the leading freight operator in the Iberian Peninsula.”
