Tens of thousands of railway sleepers and miles of concrete ties and pad will be replaced as part of a $24 million investment in Arizona’s rail infrastructure.
The work is part of a wider Union Pacific programme to boost safety and efficiency.
Work maintaining track will cost the freight operator $21 million while bridge maintenance will cost $2 million.
Almost 62,000 railway sleepers will be replaced between Tucson and Nogales, costing $7 million, and 26,000 sleepers on the line between Casa Grande and Tucson, costing $3 million.
In addition a $6 million investment will be made between Cochise and San Simon to replace 28 miles of concrete ties and pad.
From 2012 to 2016, Union Pacific invested more than $221 million on Arizona’s transportation infrastructure.
