Go-Ahead has been awarded the Network 3A Murrbahn operating contract by the Baden-Württemberg Public Transport Authority and the Bavarian Railway Authority (BEG).

Go-Ahead has been chosen ahead of the incumbent operator, Deutsche Bahn (DB), to operate commuter services on the Stuttgart – Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental – Crailsheim – Nuremberg route.

Subject to a 10-day standstill period, the company will begin its 13-year franchise agreement in December 2019 – a few months after Go-Ahead takes over the Rems-Fils and Franken-Enz routes. Stadler is suppling 11 three-car and 15 five-car FLIRT3 EMUs for these two lines.

Go-Ahead chief executive David Brown said: “We are pleased to have been awarded a contract for this important commuter route.

“We have 20 years’ experience of providing UK rail passenger services and our established team in Berlin will continue to consider further regional rail opportunities as part of our international strategy to build a long-term German rail business.

“Germany has a stable and growing economy and the largest liberalised rail market in Europe with regional passenger revenue of €6.9bn and 50bn passenger kilometres.”
