Alstom has signed a new contract to refurbish trains for the Swedish public transport agency Västtrafik – a deal that has been labelled an “important milestone” for the company.

Worth €9 million, the contract will see Alstom Sweden – which was previously known as the Motala Train – refurbish 18 X12 and X14 two-car vehicles at a workshop in Motala.

The exterior work consists of rust repair and painting, while the interior make-over will involve stripping the vehicles and mounting new walls, ceiling, floor and chairs.

Motala Train has previously performed overhaul activities on this fleet

Alstom Sweden MD Björn Asplund said: “Alstom sees this contract as an important milestone to grow its presence in the region.

“It establishes our depot in Motala as a centre for large refurbishments and revisions.

“Our staff already has great experience of these trains and will be able to efficiently use the existing local competence to deliver this project with high quality and precision.”

The X12 and X14 electric trains belong to the X10 family and were were manufactured by ABB/ASEA.

Västtrafik operates these trains primarily on the Göteborg-Borås and Uddevalla-Borås-Varberg routes.

Work is planned to start in autumn 2017, finishing in 2020.
