In New Mexico, the United States, freight operator Union Pacific (UP) is targeting the line between Fort Bliss and Carrizozo as part of a wave of network upgrades.

Between the army installation and the small town, UP will replace more than 116,000 railway sleepers and install 55,000 tonnes of rock ballast.

UP operates thousands of locomotives across tens of thousands of miles of track in the US, and has been announcing details of its upgrade programme over the last few months.

The Fort Bliss to Carrizozo works is part of a wider $23 million investment into New Mexico’s infrastructure.

UP has sanctioned $22 million to maintain railroad track for the initiative, including $1.6 million in the line across Lordsburg to replace 10,600 railroad ties and install 3,000 tonnes of rock ballast.

From 2012 to 2016, UP said that it spent more than $105 million on New Mexico’s transportation infrastructure.
