Siemens is to supply up to 78 S70 light rail vehicles (LRV) for Phoenix Valley Metro Rail.

The manufacturer – which has its US manufacturing base in Sacramento, California – has received an initial order for 11 units worth $57.9 million.

Valley Metro Rail is adding to its fleet ahead of a planned expansion of its network. This will start with the opening of the extension to Gilbert Road in Mesa in 2019.

The order was authorised by the Valley Metro Rail Board last month. The decision included a separate order for six battery-powered light rail vehicles from Brookville Equipment.

The first S70 LRV is due to be delivered in 2020.

Valley Metro Rail chairman and Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell said: “We look forward to successful collaboration and partnership with Siemens who plays a critical role in the expansion of our Valley’s light rail system.”
