Polish railway operator PKP is to spend 641 million zł (around €153 million) modernising a section of track for Rail Baltica.

Work will be conducted between Sadowne and Czyżew as part of the trans-European programme, which aims to build a standard gauge railway from Estonia to Poland, via Latvia and Lithuania, to connect the Baltic states to the European rail network.

PKP said it is one of the most important investments in the country’s railways.

Malkinia and Sadowne railway stations will be modernised  and a new viaduct and underground pedestrian crossing will be built in Malkinia.

Between Sadowne and Czyżew, the work will cover three new bridges, track, catenary, platforms and rail-road crossings.

Work will begin in 2017 and finish in 2019. Once complete, freight and passenger trains will be able to travel at speeds of up to 160km/h.

The project has been support by a 467 million zl EU grant.
