Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has announced a $1.09 billion funding package for Stage 2 of Ottawa’s fast-growing light rail network.

Last week’s announcement will be backed up with similar funding contributions from the Province of Ontario and the City of Ottawa.

Stage 2 will extend the Confederation Line, which opens next year, west and east. It will also take the existing Trillium Line further south.

In total, Stage 2 includes 38.8 km of new line and 23 new stops. Construction is slated to begin in 2019 and be completed in 2023.

In a statement, Trudeau said: “The expansion of Ottawa’s light rail transit system will make it easier for residents and visitors alike to get around and experience everything our capital city has to offer.

“This expansion will help Canadians get to work and back home to their families on time, make our air cleaner, and create good, well-paying middle class jobs.”
