The Government of Moscow has revealed plans to replace its monorail system with a tram network.

The decision made by the city’s urban planning and land use commission – and announced on June 16 – will see the monorail tracks adjusted and the system redesigned.

As part of the changes, the existing tram tracks on Akademika Korolyova Street will be extended to the Krasnopresnenskaya tram network.

Moscow said that replacing the system with a tram network will significantly reduce spending on the maintenance of city public transit and improve the connectivity of districts in the northern parts of the capital city.

The 4.7 km monorail line has six stations and was opened in 2004.
