RZD International has started laying track in the Bela Reka tunnel as part of a $80 million repair works contract.

Making use of sub-ballast mat technology – which is being used to modernise Serbian railways for the first time – the engineering firm has begun track laying in the tunnel which sits on the Resnik–Valjevo section of the Belgrade–Bar Railway railway line.

Work on the refurbishment of the tunnel walls and arch began in December, 2016, and is due to be complete by June, 2018.

Once the rails and sleepers are replaced and new signalling and catenary systems are installed, passenger trains will be able to travel up to 120km/h, compared to 50km/h previously.

The contract for the works was awarded to RZD by Serbian Railways in 2015.

This tunnel of 3.8km length and has not been renovated since it was constructed in 1958.
