The Tuas West extension of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system (SMRT) has officially opened for passenger service.

Extending the East-West Line from Joo Koon station into the Tuas area, the extension includes four stations: Gul Circle, Tuas Crescent, Tuas West Road and Tuas Link, and is expected to serve 100,000 passengers a day

Travel time between Ang Mo Kio and Tuas West is expected to be reduced by up to 35 minutes as a result.

SMRT and the Singapore Land Transport Authority said it will continuously monitor demand and ridership along the Tuas West extension and will increase train service frequency accordingly.

In 2012, Alstom was awarded a contract by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore to design, supply and install 7.5km of double track on viaduct and aluminium 3rd rail, four elevated stations, plus the track in the Tuas depot which consists of 18.5 km of single track, mainly in ballast.

The East-West line is currently the longest train line in operation in Singapore and consists of a mix of underground and above ground stations.
