The first of the new Alstom Metropolis trains for Panama’s metro has begun service.

The three-car train was manufactured in Santa Perpetua, Spain, and will operate on Line 1 of the system in Panama City.

It was delivered in April, 2017, thanks to a contracted consortium including Thales, Sofratesa, CIM and TSO. Overall the contract for the new fleet was valued at €145 million, of which Alstom’s share is €130 million.

The Alstom Metropolis trains have a maximum speed of 90km/h, wide access doors with a large passenger capacity. They have been introduced because of unforeseen passenger demand on the Panama metro.

In total the change will see the 20 three-car trains expanded to 26 five-car trains.

Line 1 is approximately 16km long with 14 stations and runs from North to South in the country’s capital city. It was opened in April, 2014.
