The Philippines government has committed to building a 106km elevated railway line from the capital city of Manila to Clark, with work expected to start later this year.

Philippine National Railways general manager Junn Magno said the project will help to decongest Manila and spread economic gains throughout the country.

The two-hour travel time by car will be reduced to 55 minutes by rail, the country’s Department of Transportation added.

The line is expected to be complete by 2021 supported by funding from Japan.

Thirteen train sets of eight cars will run on the line, travelling at speeds of up to 120km/h.

There will be 17 stations on the line: Marilao, Meycauayan, Valenzuela, Caloocan, Tutuban, Solis, Bocaue, Balagtas, Guigunto, Malolos, Calumpit, Apalit, San Fernando, Angeles, Clark, Clark International Airport and the proposed New Clark City.

Department of Transportation secretary Arthur Tugade said: “We have been waiting for this project for more than 12 years. Now, you have a President, a no nonsense performer. You have a no nonsense cabinet.

“Now, we are ready to put into a reality a dream that has been there for many years. Give us your trust and confidence. Give us your prayers.”
