Engineering consultant WSP has won a SEK 330 million (€34.3 million) contract to support Danish State Railways’ (DSB) ‘Future Train’ procurement competition.

Worth an estimated DKK 20 billion (around €2.7 billion), the Future Train project will shape the specification and procurement of Denmark’s new electric passenger train fleet between now and 2030.

DSB has said in the past it hopes to learn lessons from the problems faced with its IC4 series trains. The IC4 – although now in service – had a rocky introduction, including long delays to the original delivery schedule and reliability issues; the entire fleet is now due to be phased out of passenger operation.

WSP said [in Danish] Future Train would be one of “Europe’s most comprehensive train projects” and “undoubtedly one of the most important procurement [sic] in the railway industry”.

WSP will provide technical and management advisory services. The scope of the 15-year contract also includes support infrastructure such as new maintenance facilities and new IT systems.
