Engineers have continued upgrade work at New York’s Penn station to improve the reliability of services.

Station owner Amtrak said that 125ft of track and around 600 railway sleepers on a number of tracks have recently been replaced and preparatory work has begun in advance of the extensive summer work, including work at two interlockings.

An interlocking prevents conflicting train movements on one route.

Amtrak said that work is being undertaken to improve operations and reliability at North America’s busiest transportation hub, which is used by more than 600,000 passengers each workday.

Earlier this year the governor of New York Andrew Cuomo announced an action plan to deal with what he described as the “intolerable state of disrepair” at Pennsylvania Station which had “reached breaking point.”

He added that action was needed to “find both short and long-term solutions to these growing challenges, upgrade outdated infrastructure and meet the needs of current and future generations of New Yorkers.”
