China Railway High-Speed (CRH) electric trains developed by CRRC have begun trials in Inner Mongolia, China.

These ‘energy’ trains can travel at speeds of up to 200km/h and are the first CRH trains that are powered by the grid and battery in China, according to CRRC. Running on battery power, the trains’ highest speed is 160km/h.

Grids are less available in areas where extreme weather conditions such as sandstorms and cold temperatures are common, at which point the train can switch to battery power.

The trains are also more environmentally friendly as they can operate without the need for power grids to be constructed in all areas.

CRRC added that the new acoustic materials that provide sound insulation and complete WiFi coverage also create quiet and entertaining traveling conditions.
