The Government of Victoria, Australia, has awarded Bombardier and CPB Contractors a $1 billion contract to install 55km of high-capacity signalling (HCS) in the Metro Tunnel.
The Metro Tunnel, which will run from North Melbourne to South Yarra, will connect the existing Sunbury and Cranebourne/Pakenham lines. By doing so, it will remove traffic from the City Loop and create extra capacity around the core network.
The roll-out of HCS will be the first on Australia’s existing railway network. HCS is a CBTC signalling system which automatically controls braking and allows trains to be run more closely together, increasing service frequency from 20 trains per hour to between 24-30 trains per hour.
The Metro Tunnel signalling will operate the 65 new high-capacity trains currently being built in Victoria, which will run on the Sunbury to Cranbourne-Pakenham line via the Metro Tunnel.
Dedicated control centres will be built in Dandenong and Sunshine.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said: “This is the next major piece of the puzzle – high-tech signalling to run bigger trains, more often through the Metro Tunnel.
“After years of inaction from the former Liberal Government, we’re building the train network passengers need and deserve.”
The Government of Victoria said that expressions of interest will open this week to deliver the final major works package of Metro Tunnel.
