Indonesian passenger rail operator Kerata Api Indonesia (KAI) is working with government-owned rolling stock manufacturer INKA to make sleeper trains.

Development is currently in the “exploratory” stage as KAI assesses the consumer demand for the service.

It is set to launch carriages with beds in on certain long-distances services to see how successful they are. A wider roll-out will depend on passenger interest.

When pressed on a launch date, KAI president Edi Sukmoro said it will begin “as soon as possible.”

KAI, also known as Indonesian Railways Company, is also owned by the government. It began operating on the Southeast Asian island country in 1945.

INKA was founded in 1981. Its trains have operated in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia and from 2006 it has been involved in Bangladesh.
