Testing has begun on the Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) new fleet of train cars in San Francisco, the USA.

Over the course of this past week, the pilot batch of trains have been running on the line in test mode for the first time.

Already the fleet has been checked on test track and on the BART system overnight when no passenger trains operate.

They are not currently certified to carry passengers so only staff have been onboard.

Certain trains in the new fleet are also being used off-track for operator training.

The original BART cars are reaching the end of their service life and are being replaced.

Bombardier was contracted to supply the new fleet in 2012. In total it will manufacture 775 new train cars by 2021.

The first trains are expected to be launched in 2017.
