Initially 18 engineers and administrative staff will be employed at the centre, with the number expected to rise to 30 by 2020.

Alstom products and equipment such as pantographs and transformers from other companies will be maintained at the centre, which consists of a repair and testing shop, a warehouse, a spare parts shop and office space.

Corrective and overhaul work on Alstom’s Prima T8 and Prima M4 locomotives will be performed at the 2,660m2 site for 25 years.

Bernard Peille, managing director of Alstom in the Commonwealth of Independent States, said: “Through implementation of new technology and developing local expertise, we are proud to get Kazakhstan’s industrial base to a new level, which opens new promising prospects for the country as an important hub linking Europe, Middle East, Asia and Russia through new Silk Way.

“Being the only repairing centre for modern traction and braking system in the central Asian region, Alstom strengthens its long presence, developing local competencies, contributing to the economic development of Kazakhstan and opening new opportunities for export in neighbouring countries.”
