Trenitalia has signed a new nine-year regional operating contract on the Italian island of Sardinia.

The contract is valued at €513 million and includes a commitment to invest €123.4 million in regional rail services – the majority of which will be financed by Trenitialia.

The new contract was announced by the president of the Sardinia region, Francesco Pigliaru, and the chief executive of Trenitalia, Barbara Morgante.

Around €87.7 million will be invested in 18 new trains and some €29.7 million will be spent on refurbishing the existing fleet.

The new trains will likely include 10 new ATR 220 units, which Trenitalia hopes to receive next year, and eight next-generation vehicles, which are expected to be delivered between 2020-21.

The Region of Sardinia will pay €43 million a year in fees to Trenitalia to operate 3.7 million train kilometres a year – the equivalent of 180 trains a day serving 43 stations on the island.

The new service agreement also sets new targets for the quality and reliability of services.
