The final section of track has been installed for Stage 2 of the Gold Coast Light Rail network, with Stage 3 on the way.

The 7.3-kilometre extension will link Stage 1 at the Gold Coast University Hospital to Helensvale station, via Parkwood East and Parkwood.

Stage 2 includes stops at five sporting venues and will be used by visitors to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

As well as completing the tracklaying for Stage 2, Queensland’s state government announced that $5 million would be made available to develop the business case for Stage 3A.

In a statement, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “Light Rail has fundamentally changed public transport on the Gold Coast and once Stage 2 opens people will be able to travel seamlessly across the Coast and to Brisbane.

“The improved rail connectivity between Queensland’s two largest cities has been embraced by the people of the Gold Coast and will help drive future growth and opportunity.”
