The European arm of US intermodal freight company RailRunner has launched a new service between Bratislava, Slovakia, and Braunschweig, Germany.

A block train service will operate daily in both directions, initially carrying pocket wagons and craneable mega trailers, swap bodies and containers.

RailRunner said it expects to only move small volumes at first during the “start-up period” and will closely monitor data relating to capacity utilisation, traction energy demand, handling performance and transport time.

RailRunner launched its European business, RailRunner Europe GmbH, in Hamburg in 2015.

RailRunner has developed its own ‘Combined Transport (CT)’ system which uses semitrailers loaded onto specially designed bogies that don’t require conventional terminals and loading equipment.

The company says it hopes to introduce its innovative rolling stock solution to underserved European markets.
